BIM To The Rescue: Creating Sustainable Buildings
Building information modeling (BIM) is an evolving strategy that uses technology to create extraordinarily detailed 3D models of a building's interior and overall structure, with the goal of better merging design intent and actual construction.  BIM can also serve as a blueprint for facility managers, and assist in maintaining and operating buildings and evaluating and improving energy efficiency, according to this article by Jennifer Hicks.

BIM Helps Contractors Meet LEED Requirements

Building information modeling software can help contractors better achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design building requirements through information sharing.  "BIM helps us incorporate accurate modeling information and pushes important decisions to the beginning of the design process, improving coordination and reducing errors," said Susan Spencer Lewin, a Toronto architect in this Daily Commercial News article.

For contractors in certain trades (HVAC, steel fabrication, grading), BIM is becoming practically routine.  Read more . . .

National BIM Standard
Building Information Models (BIM) for the facility industry are comparable to the transformation that occurred in the aircraft, microprocessor and automotive industries. There are some definitions being circulated that say BIM is simply a 3D model of a facility which is far from the truth. BIM is intended to be an open standards based repository of information for the facility owner/operator to use and maintain throughout the life-cycle of a facility.
